About Aaron Mead:
I am a passionate musician, composer, and educator with many years of experience teaching private lessons in composition, arranging, saxophone performance, jazz improvisation, and music production. As a graduate from The New School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Performance, I draw from a deep understanding of both traditional and experimental music.
As the leader of the avant-garde psychedelic jazz fusion band Horizon Line, I explore bold sonic landscapes alongside bandmates Tanzanite Chen (guitar), Ronan McKinnon (bass), and Russell Markey (drums). We’ve performed at venues across New York City, including Shrine Harlem, The Bowery Electric, Rockwood Music Hall, and The PINKfrog Cafe.
I was recently featured in The New York Times for my performance on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet in the U.S. premiere of Escalator Over The Hill by Carla Bley. I also served as principal Reed 3 in the Mannes Unsilent film production directed by David Fulmer.
My woodwind skills include soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, as well as flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and bassoon. I've had the privilege of studying with renowned artists including Dave Glasser, Arturo O’Farrill, Steven Long, Darius Jones, Jane Ira Bloom, Jason Marshall, and Elsa Nilsson—each of whom has shaped my musical voice and approach. My work spans a wide range of genres and disciplines, reflecting a commitment to innovation, emotional depth, and meaningful artistic expression.
